The Muslim Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri Community of Peterborough has its foundation in the families who settled in Peterborough after being expelled from Uganda in the early 1970s. This at first tiny community held regular gatherings and soon began to expand until in 1978 the first purpose-built mosque in the West for the Khoja Shia Community was built at Burton Street in Peterborough. This in turn led to a further increase in our community as more and more families made Peterborough their home.
From these seeds has sprung the thriving community of today - a community which is still growing. In 1992 we completed the purpose built Husaini Centre providing facilities for Madrasah Classrooms, Ghuslkhana, Ladies’ & Gents Halls, and Kitchen facilities.
Future Plans
We hold on a daily basis a wide range of religious and other activities , but we are once again running out of space, especially on key occasions. By the grace of Allah (SWT), and with the whole-hearted support of the community members, we have been able to seize the opportunity of acquiring a further adjoining site (shown tinted orange on the site plan) which adjoins the existing building at the rear.
Our community has continued to increase and with the development of the Southern Township and other areas of Peterborough we expect not only the current membership to grow but also to welcome many new members in the future.
Where are we now
With the blessing of Allah (SWT) Phase 1 being the acquisition of the site is now complete, achieved through donations and substantial soft loans from members of the community through out the world, The requirements mentioned below form part of Phase 2 and we would like to proceed with this quickly but with prudence in managing the available resources.
The Requirements
We are developing a Master plan to take us forward for the next 35 years our aim being to build multi-functional facilities to serve the foreseeable needs of our community.
Our current requirement are :-
- Extension of the Ladies’ and Gents’ imambargah to accommodate additional capacity during sacred months.
- Additional Madrasah Classes and a lecture room to avoid assembling mobile classrooms.
- Provision of a fully equipped Crèche and pre-school facility.
